In 2017 fate crossed the paths of two girls, one from Ghana and the other from Spain, bringing them together in Koforidua (the Eastern Region of Ghana). They developed a special bond that united them as 'mother and daughter'. The butterfly is symbolic of their union, as one of them was wearing a T-shirt with a butterfly on when they met. From this connection the OKUTU project was born. ‘Okutu’ means butterfly in Dangbe, the language of an ethnic group in Ghana known as Krobo. Together they design fashion products that creatively fuse both of their cultures and styles. Each product is carefully handcrafted by rural Ghanaian women. They collaborate with talented artisans to create unique pieces with a mission and a meaning. The project was born with the aim of creating job opportunities for women, and promoting handicrafts in the country. In addition, with the purchase of a product, you support the complete studies of a child in Ghana.
